Arlington County Fair opens Thursday

fairquiltIn honor of the Arlington County (Virginia) Fair which opens on Thursday, here are two quilts from previous fairs. This one shows the types of competitive exhibits and was on the front of the fair book in 2002. It was initially exhibited in 2000. It is machine applique and machine quilted. Though a fairly simple concept, I proudly consider it one of my few original ideas.

lighthouse Okay, I posted a small portion of this quilt in the Quilts category header – now the entire thing… It was made from kits from The Country Quilter in Somers, NY. After many attempts, this lighthouse quilt earned me Grand Champion of the Art Needlework Division in 2002. I finally beat out the lady who won every year with her “pulled thread” pieces.

I’ll post a better picture of the quilt once I get the pictures scanned.

More Flowers

hibiscus pink4sunflower1This pink hibiscus is the color I was hoping for when I bought the new plant last year.
The sunflowers didn’t do as well this year as in previous years. But the gold finches are enjoying the ones which have matured.

Sarah’s Quilt goes home

sarah quiltsarah livingroomWhen Sarah was 10, I told her I would make her any quilt she wanted. She decided she would like a Double Wedding Ring quilt and picked the black ivy print as the background. Okay, so the DWR is a pretty difficult quilt, especially when you only do it in spurts – I kept having to relearn how to piece the curves correctly. Anyway, I worked on it on and off for eight years and finished it about 6 years ago. It went to its proud new (home) owner on Sunday – Sarah and her new condo in Rockville.
