Stopping to smell the roses…

Usually have all of June and July off after National events and QOC events finish, but this year there were two additional events for the WPFG at the end of June…now a month’s break before going off to Scotland for the Scottish 6 Days and volunteering at WOC.

My sister, Cris, has been sending me pictures of the garden in Baltimore. Here is a view of some flowers from my garden…the actual roses are not photo worthy.

Where is Winter?!

February 7 – 53 F – crocuses are up. Rode my bike in short sleeves and shorts today. A little underdressed compared to the others, but I was comfy, so who cares.

While dumping my soda cans from the car into the recycle bin in the side yard, I observed the flowers sprouting, as many others have. The bee in the first shot was a surprise, being so early in the year. I guess the flowers and the critters are very confused…

Dahlia Bush

Roger has had no success with growing dahlias the way that the local dahlia society advocates. Their literature says that you nip the side branches to force one large bloom, and you should dig the bulb out each year. Well, Roger can’t stand nipping the branches off since this kills off something which is living, and he has had no success over wintering the bulbs, so he leaves them in the ground and hopes for the best. When nothing comes up the next year, he buys some more. This is an example of the terrible things which happen when you leave the bulb in the ground from last year and don’t nip off any of the side branches. This plant has been flowering since at least July 4, the date I took another picture of it…

Garden Bounty

Tons of cherry tomatoes (and a big one), which Roger planted.
The lighter orange ones are very tasty. I had a tomato and Cool Whip sandwich last night. Well, two of them actually. Yummy! Echoes of my childhood.

I also discovered a “joiner” pumpkin.
Pretty cool, because if I had actually tried to grow a pumpkin,
it probably wouldn’t have happened.
